It is human nature to want to feel included. Most people want to experience acceptance, a sense of belonging to something, and most of all, to be in on the joke. Nobody likes seeing everybody else in the group laughing at something and then having to ask ‘What’s funny?’. The great thing about memes is that they offer you the opportunity to perpetually understand the punchline, so long as you are chronically online enough and are willing to do a little research every so often. Even if you decide that you don’t want to engage with that, the likelihood is that the memes you look at are trying hard enough to offer ‘relatable’ humor that you will still get the gist if you concentrate. While the pictures we see on the internet may be the ultimate way to distract ourselves, they can contain many different kinds of messages and even knowledge.
