Of all the life advice out there, ‘just be yourself’ is probably one of the most maddening to hear. Almost everybody has a story of when they chose to be themselves without apology and promptly faced some consequences that they didn’t want to have. Despite this, though, it is still a recommendation that it is important for us to follow in the long run. It is hard to be truly comfortable or happy unless we are being true to ourselves. 

Memes are a medium that understands this well, as so many of them get their sense of humor from the idea that they are an avenue for an unfettered expression of the self. This is not always pretty, but it certainly provides a lot of people with a heck of a lot of entertainment. If that isn’t a good enough reason to be yourself, then it’s hard to say what is.
