I don’t know about y’all, but I’m obsessed with Roku City and Roku City memes alike. It’s that fictional little purple city that slowly moves horizontally on your Roku TV screen if you haven’t clicked a button recently enough. Roku City has got everything: a beautiful skyline, a waterfront, an old-timey movie theatre, Big Ben, The Empire State Building, and a Ferris wheel to boot. It has got everything you could ever want in a city. The only problem is it’s a screensaver and not a real place. 

Roku City and other weird distractions like it were a real hoot during the shutdown. My roommates and I would put on hours-long videos that simulated dark academic libraries, French cafes, rainy fairy forests, and more just to feel like we were in different locations than our living room. Roku City was no exception to this strange escapism. If you need to escape from your current life in the big bustling city, these funny memes will provide a different kind of relief than simulated environments ever could.
