For a long time being a trash animal was a raccoon’s game. The masked bandits would creep around in the night, destroying garbage bags of food, rifling through compost, even traipsing into Brooklyn apartments to drink water from a cat’s fountain. That last one happened right in front of my eyes. Until recently, raccoons left our other favorite trash critter, possums, in the dust. While they may not be quite as cute as their rivals, they have got heaps of personality. And we’re happy to see that in the past couple years they’ve received a lot of love in the meme department. These excellent specimens are proof.
