Women are constantly policed about what we wear, no matter what age we are. I was being told my shorts were too short before I was even double digits. Even if someone doesn’t directly say, «You need to change into different clothing,» women and girls are judged and heavily socially encouraged to dress a specific way. If we’re not being policed by others, we’re telling ourselves, «It would be absurd for a woman of my size to wear something so bright» or «If I wear this, everyone will think that I think I’m 20 years younger than I am…which I don’t think!» The world would be so much better if we just wore whatever we wanted to wear and chanced the consequences. Imagine how much more peaceful life would be if your mom never commented on someone wearing a crop top that she thinks doesn’t look good in a crop top.
