There is a double-edged sword of being good at a job, especially if it’s a job that you’re not that invested in, or that you want to turn into some other kind of position. Of course, you want to succeed in any role you’re given. You’re told that if you meet certain goals and hit certain targets you’ll move up, make more money, and get a little bit closer to your dream job.
You certainly don’t do that by failing at your job. You only do that by excelling beyond their expectations. But what if being good at your job suddenly becomes a bad thing? This only happens in the hands of not-so-competent employers, but there are plenty of those out there. These are the bosses who tell you that you’re too valuable in your position to be replaced. This leaves you in the awkward position of knowing that you can only truly grow as an employee at a different company.
