Should a household be obligated to change its decor because the neighbors don’t like it?
The people that we live close to can be a real roll of the dice in more ways than one. They could be the loveliest neighbors imaginable, or the living nightmare who is inconsiderate, messy, and makes an ungodly amount of noise when you’re trying to sleep. It is not always easy to see what kinds of neighbors you are going to get.
One thing that can cause more distress than you might think is the decorative choices that the person next door makes with their house or apartment. It is all very well to baulk at the tales of crazy HOA members enforcing ridiculous rules, but there are occasionally very good reasons that neighbors may be upset by how somebody near them presents their home. It is the kind of thing that has to be taken on a case-by-case basis.
A disagreement on this topic can get overly personal, seeing as it is kind of an attack on someone’s taste. Still, it is possible to treat this issue in a way that is reasonable, so long as everybody involved is willing to have a mature conversation about it.
