Boss tells employee who works 65-70 hours/week to take on community service instead when she asks for a raise

Asking for a raise is not an easy thing to do. You would hate if it wasn’t treated like a serious request.

If you have it in you to ask for a raise, it was probably for a reason. You aren’t just asking for the sake of asking, you’re asking because you feel like you deserve one. Maybe your financial reality has changed, or maybe the nature of your job has evolved, and you’re taking on more responsibility than you used to. You’ve given your all to your company, and you expect for that hard work to be acknowledged. And, if you’ve been somewhere for a long enough time, then you probably want that to be taken into consideration. But that’s not what happened here, where an employee was having to fight for what they deserved. Then their boss came in with a pretty far-out ask.
