Mom Forces 17-Year-Old Daughter and 16-Year-Old Son to Catch 1 Fish Before She Buys Them Cars: ‘When They Were Little, They Wouldn’t Even Try Fishing Because it Looked Hard.’

Is she teaching them responsibility, or is she making them jump through arbitrary hoops?

It’s important to teach teenagers that they’re not entitled to expensive, material things. Just because everyone else in their class is getting a brand-new car the day they turn 16 doesn’t mean they will get the same privilege, and honestly, that’s probably for the best. It’s a bad idea to sink $40K into a car that a 16-year-old could easily drive into a ditch because they aren’t mature enough to be careful behind the wheel. If you’re going to buy a teenager a car, you’re a fool if you don’t buy a used one.

A lot of parents make their teenagers get summer jobs before they buy them a car, to make sure they’re responsible enough to have one or have enough money to pay for their own gas and car insurance. The mom in this story had a different idea for her two kids, and she’s questioning whether it’s actually worth going through with.
