Austin Tenant Shares Horror At Being Congratulated For Nearly $2.5K Rent Increase

When you’re somebody who rents the place where you live, it’s easy to feel like you’re being played. Every month, we spend one third or even more of our income for the privilege of having a roof over our heads, and half the time said roof isn’t all that great anyway. On top of that, most areas have never implemented rent controls, meaning it’s easy to be slapped with a prohibitively expensive rent increase for no good reason.

Some cities are worse than others when it comes to this, and it would appear that Austin, Texas has a particular problem with the issue at the moment. It has been highlighted recently in an eye-popping TikTok by @katelynfletcher, in which she revealed how she was being expected to pay $2,478 more per month in rent if she chose to renew her tenancy.

Viewers were even more gobsmacked by the revelation than she was, not least because the email appeared to be congratulating her on the predicament. What are the odds that her apartment also has several easily fixable problems that the landlord keeps conveniently forgetting about?
