Why would she lie in this situation?
There are lots of reasons to bend the truth. It’s not good to lie regularly, but who hasn’t fibbed to get out of an awkward conversation? Sometimes it’s just easier to tell a little white lie instead of getting into the whole messy truth. I am notorious for lying about my occupation to strangers. Not that I’m being sensitive or private; it’s just sometimes easier to say «English teacher» instead of launching into a whole tome about myself and my career aspirations. But there is a difference between telling a little white lie and changing the truth to someone’s detriment. There is a reason that they say honesty is the best policy. This is especially true with family. Family may be difficult to deal with sometimes, but they’re there for you. And you should do your best to tell them the truth. The lie in this story was particularly baffling, because it seemed to only exist to spite someone else, and for no good reason. The brother in this story did a spectacularly nice thing by baking his sister a birthday cake. Everyone who has ever made a cake from scratch knows just how much goes into it. It’s pretty much an all-day affair. Especially if you’re making a big cake for a crowd, like this person was doing. And then the sister had the gall to say that she bought it from a bakery. Why?
