Cursed ‘Chop Suey Sandwich’ Goes Viral, Disgusts the Internet

Food can be an incredibly polarizing subject, especially when you get into regional delicacies. I’ve recoiled at the thought of eating Australia’s Vegemite, and the pungent, gooey mess of natto – a fermented soybean dish from Japan. But neither bothers me as much as the questionable-looking chop suey sandwiches of New England.

Before this weekend, I lived a pretty innocent existence where food is concerned. My biggest food complaint has been with deep dish pizza, which is actually a tomato soup in a bread bowl. But I digress. This weekend, completely against my will, I was made aware of the existence of the chop suey sandwich. The revelation came courtesy of the Regional American Food Twitter account. While the account features photos of some fairly innocuous American cuisine, like disco fries, it also educates people on some of the grosser culinary delights of the weirdest corners of the country. Like the cannibal sandwiches of Wisconsin.

Yesterday, the account tweeted a photo photo of a chop suey sandwich from Salem Massachusetts. The photo, which resembles a pile of slimy worms inside a roll, went viral pretty quickly. It’s amassed almost 30k likes since it was shared, as well as thousands of retweets. Because it’s disgusting.
