Speaking another language in a majority English-speaking country can feel like having your own secret code.

The rate of native English speakers who can speak other languages fluently is pathetically low, so the likelihood of being understood in many contexts often isn’t that high. As a result, plenty of multilingual people enjoy the ability to share secrets and talk smack out in public while being pretty safe in the knowledge that most people are not able to eavesdrop.
