The content of the job itself is awfully important. You would hate to be stuck at a job doing something that bored you or bothered you. You want to be engaged in what you’re doing, and you want to work with a good team. And then there are the other things that go into making a job work or not. The commute. The benefits. The need to relocate. The hours. The expectations. This constellation of factors makes up a complicated matrix of what we should look for in an upcoming position. And you don’t always have room to negotiate. It’s a competitive market out there, and every job offer should be taken seriously. When a huge salary bump is dangled in front of your face, though, then it’s hard to say no. But there are plenty of reasons you would turn down more money, though it may seem unconventional to others. It can be difficult to justify your opinions to other people, but you don’t have to. Unless you have a family that relies on you, you’re allowed to take whatever job you want without consulting anyone else. You’re an independent person and you can enjoy that independence. But it can be difficult to know whether or not you’re doing the right thing.
