Entitled friend brings vegetarian cousin to dinner with one hour’s notice, then demands host make him a separate meal: ‘The whole dinner went bad after that’

When an unexpected plus-one comes with unexpected dietary demands.

Hosting dinner already means planning, shopping, cooking, and hoping everyone enjoys themselves. This host thought she had everything covered until a friend announced a last-minute guest who happened to be vegetarian. With no warning and a full meal already prepared, she refused to cook again, but what started as an awkward dinner soon became a friendship-ending argument.

This story feels very personal because, even though I’m not a vegetarian, I don’t eat that much meat, so whenever I have a dinner party, I try to speak with the host in advance and find together a meal that could fit both of us. Now, that being said, if I were to arrive at a place with no invitation and little notice, then I would never expect the host to cook something else for me.

And, in this case, the vegetarian is not the one who’s demanding a separate meal. Their cousin, who is the host’s friend, is the one who is expecting another dish. That makes the situation even more weird, because why do they care so much about that when the other two people agreed that they could munch on salad and crackers and then look for food on their way home?

What makes it especially frustrating is that the host had actually put real effort into the evening. She planned the menu a week ahead, bought enough food for the people who confirmed, and spent most of the day cooking. Adding another person at the last minute is already a favor. Expecting a customized meal on top of that feels like turning someone’s hospitality into an obligation.

Still, I can also understand why some of their friends thought the reaction afterward went too far. The cousin himself seemed perfectly reasonable, and the friend eventually apologized for not communicating beforehand. Removing her from the group chat and ignoring her calls for days transformed one uncomfortable dinner into something much bigger. Sometimes you can be completely right about the original problem and still overreact to it later.c
