Do bosses need to give a reason when they fire someone from a job?
If we’re being real, any refusal to explain a termination is likely to only add to the upset and confusion of the person who is being fired. If they don’t get told what went wrong before they are put out of a job, they are less likely to be able to work on themselves in preparation for their next position. Just like any part of being in the workplace, having feedback is important.
At the same time, there are also examples of employees who have faced firings and layoffs who could have done without the explanation as to why their labor wasn’t needed anymore. Hearing that your boss is «prioritizing the health of the company» when you are still thinking about losing your method for paying the bills is not that fun. If they are going to get an explanation, it is important that it is a considerate one. Ultimately, there is no nice way to be let go unless it was something that you were really hoping for. The best-case scenario is that the person doing it uses adequate detail and tact.
