American Psycho is one of the most well known and iconic movies of the 21st century, and its legend has only grown through the many memes it has inspired in the past two decades. There have got to be some messed up psychological reasons behind the fact that so many people seem to find Christian Bale as a serial killer a humorous relatable figurehead, but that doesn’t stop the fact that most of the memes about him are pretty damn funny. 

Perhaps one of the motivating factors behind the internet’s enduring love of Patrick Bateman is the element of satire. It seems that we can’t go five minutes on the internet these days without running into some annoying dude espousing the benefits of toxic masculinity. Taking a character that is all about making fun of the heartless, capitalist, patriarchal society we live in and turning him into an ironic motivational figure? That’s sigma behavior.
