The Cringiest Parenting Texts of the Week (August 8, 2023)

Kids might say the darndest things, but so do parents. My mom recently told me a wild story about writer and composer Mary Rogers that proves that some people aren’t meant to be parents. For context, she was the daughter of Broadway composing legend Richard Rogers, and her son Adam Guettel went on to write The Light In The Piazza, a musical that earned 11 nominations at the Tony Awards that year. It was up against some stiff competition (primarily the Monty Python musical Spamalot), but suffice it to say, it won big that night. At the Tonys, right before one of the big awards was announced, Adam looked at his mom Mary and said, «I love you, Mom.» In response, she said, «Spamalot is going to win.» Taking that critical moment away from her son in an attempt to «be real» with him is cruel beyond belief. If that story made you as sad as it made me, these parenting texts will itch that exact spot.
