‘The fallout was immediate’: Parents plan surprise 30th birthday at daughter’s house without asking her for permission, call her selfish when she declines to attend

Hosting a party is no small feat. It can be a joy in many ways, you get to facilitate good times between people you love and it’s very rewarding, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its downsides. If you’ve ever done it at your own home, you know that it can put you in a state of anxiety for the whole party.

For one, you are saddled with wondering if everyone is having a good time and if it’s your fault if they’re not. For two, you have to worry about your precious belongings being stolen or damaged. For three, you most likely have to clean up at the end of the night. These are pretty big undertakings, and certainly not something you want to be forced into. The joy of hosting is that you’ve decided to open up your home to guests. The joy is not having guests thrust upon you.
