The two-week notice thing is engrained in our culture. It’s what we expect from each other when it comes to leaving a job. It’s just enough time for everyone to get their ducks in a row before moving on. There is an increasing amount of people, though, who don’t see a need for it at all. They think that since employers love to ignore it, you shouldn’t be required to utilize it in the first place. These people have somewhat of a point. Since you can get fired on a dime, then why shouldn’t you return that same energy to your employers? This seems like a bit of a double standard when it comes to employment.
Hirings and firings can also be an emotional time for everyone. The employer might feel hurt that they’re going to be down an employee, and an employee might be scared that they’re going to lack stability.
