Happy belated birthday to Sir Ian McKellen! Without his iconic portrayal of Gandalf, the Lord of the Rings movies would not be the iconic masterpieces they are known and revered as today. Of course, we have to acknowledge that it was a group effort that helped them to be so legendary, but Gandalf definitely led the group, much like he does in the plot. While it cannot be denied that the works of Tolkien that deal with Middle-earth stand out as great pieces of literature, it is the films that have cemented them as the perfect fodder for hilarious memes. Peter Jackson may not have known that his interpretations were going to break the internet repeatedly in this way, but we sure are glad that it has. It gives us a reason to chuckle every single week, and we could all do with as many of those as we can get.
