Voice of Master Chief Gets Roasted Over Chili-less Chili Recipe

Most of the time the gaming world can seem impenetrable to those who are unfamiliar. I’m often reading threads about games or consoles that go way over my head. But every now and then something magical happens to bring gaming nerds and non-gaming nerds together. And sometimes it happens to be something funny – or triggering. It depends on how you look at it.

A few days ago, DJ Steven Downes, who is the voice of Halo’s Master Chief, provided us with the exact magic mentioned above. In a wholesome tweet, Downes shared his oft-requested recipe for chili. At first glance, it’s a sweet action, a way to connect with fans. But upon closer inspection, there’s one glaring problem: His chili contains no chili peppers.

Here are the ingredients:

2lb. ground beef

1 28oz can tomatoes

2 8oz can tomato sauce

115oz can kidney beans

1 large potato, diced

1 large onion, grated

Later in the recipe, he instructs followers to add salt and pepper to taste.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with chili – this ain’t it. Chili (or chili con carne) is a dish that originated in Northern Mexico or Southern Texas. While it does usually contain beef (I use cubed and browned chuck in my recipe), tomatoes, and beans (polarizing for some Texans), it sure as hell doesn’t contain potatoes.  And unlike this recipe, chili contains peppers. Lots of them. Bell peppers. Jalapenos. Poblanos. Ancho. Chipotle. Ideally, the fresh peppers should be roasted for extra flavor. Needless to say, the lack of seasoning shocked many internet users, who rushed to point out Downes’ fatal error.
