Perhaps the funniest thing about cats is that most of them aren’t even trying to be funny. A lot of them (apart from the orange ones) just have this built-in sense of dignity that makes them incapable of not taking themselves seriously, even if they are doing something patently ridiculous.

You wouldn’t always think this when you look at cat memes, though. They have developed so many different formats and levels of projection that if an alien visited Earth and their only exposure to domesticated felines was through internet humor, they might be kind of confused when they met one in the flesh. What they lack in pinpoint accuracy, cat memes more than make up for in the screwball entertainment that they bring to the world. Also, some of them are almost too relatable to those who have shared their lives with a cat before.
