I love a sci-fi movie that’s also a comedy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for swashbuckling adventure and high-flying drama, but there’s nothing better than a good belly laugh. All of my favorite movies have excellent laugh lines in them. Because life is almost always a little bit funny, even when it’s sad. When you’re at your lowest, sometimes that’s when a well-placed joke will hit the hardest.
Since it’s true about life, it should be true about movies. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a great example of this. It’s a comedy first, packed to the gills with outrageously goofy gags and silly references. But it’s also decidedly sci-fi, with time travel out the wazz. This is the best type of movie. It doesn’t limit its imagination and it keeps it silly. For my money, Star Wars could have used a few more jokes. But then again there is always Spaceballs.
