Science fiction is here to teach us about our own world. By imagining other worlds, we are more capable of understanding our own. If we know about what happens on Naboo, then we can better understand what happens in Des Moines. I don’t make the rules. This is just how science fiction works. We need the creative brains of others to help us unlock the creativity possible within our own world. 

This is what artists are for. Sure, they’re creating fictional stories about worlds and galaxies that look similar to our own, but they’re humans who live on Earth just like us, so they’re naturally going to be excavating the human experience. That’s what all art is trying to do; science fiction just does it in a way that involves aliens and robots and galaxies far, far away. This is part of the reason we’re so drawn to it. We’d love to imagine a world that’s not our own.
