If Amy Madigan wins the Best Supporting Actress Oscar on Sunday, it won’t be a Career Oscar.

Movie fans have become notorious for calling any Oscar nomination or win by an older actor a «Career Oscar.» These are given to artists who have been repeatedly nominated for Oscars and have never actually won, or artists who have such an impressive or extensive body of work that it’s absurd that they haven’t been recognized for it yet. Sometimes the Academy will award an older actor that they want to see win a competitive Oscar before they pass away, but they also give out Honorary Oscars to actors who never won the statue during their prime, like Deborah Kerr (who was nominated for Best Actress six times).
