Comedy is Elevating the Horror Genre Towards Cinematic Prestige

There are a handful of timeless tropes that define horror as a genre. Monsters appear over the protagonist’s shoulder, jump scares shock the audience, and moody lighting has persisted since the dawn of horror in cinema. But there are a few modern tweaks that have taken horror filmmaking into the cinematic hall of fame.

Most notably, modern horror filmmaking has been elevated to a higher level thanks to a surprisingly influential group of new enthusiasts: Comedians. Comedy and horror may seem like they’re on opposite sides of the cinematic coin, but in truth, they’re quite similar. With a story’s progression hinged on built-up suspense, audience emotion, and a well-timed punchline, the two genres are not so different after all, especially in their production.
