Parental choices do not always reflect children’s preferences.
A lot of the time, this is unequivocally a good thing and a crucial part of what being a parent entails. Plenty of kids do not care that much about getting an education or eating vegetables regularly, for example. However, there are instances where the ways in which parents want to raise their children are a little more controversial, and more in line with their personal worldview than a societal one.
Of course, this isn’t always a bad thing, and sometimes it offers real benefits. That being said, when more unorthodox parenting choices get made, it is essential that kids get given a say in the matter once they are old enough. Moms and dads can try and influence them all they like, but that doesn’t mean it is going to work. At the end of the day, they’re raising people, not clones.
