Watching films for the fun of it or just to log them into Letterboxd

I don’t judge. I get why people, especially film geeks, are kind of obsessed with Letterboxd. As a reader, I had my fair share of using apps like Goodreads. I understand the joy of sharing your opinion about a kind of art that you like with the world. I understand the people who like writing well-thought-out reviews that conceptualize the movie and their opinion. But I also enjoy the ones that seem like a little joke full of sarcasm and irony. Is great that film lovers get to have a place where they can share their thoughts about a movie they watched and make friends over similar interests. It’s like a dating app but for film lovers. 

The problem for me is not the app in itself. It’s deeper than that. I have some issues with the concept of watching a movie and, mid-film, already starting to think about the review that you are going to post. Or people watching 5 minutes of a movie and already logging it on to the app. I also can’t find a reason for the pretentiousness of it all. Some people love to put on there that their 4 favorite films are a slovakic balck and white movie that is a 3-hour film without sound. I get it, you like the film industry, and you deeply care for the art of it all. But two years ago your favorite movie was Shrek. Why pretend? You liked that conceptualization of the black-and-white film, but don’t lie to me. That is not one of your favorite 4 movies. Maybe this is all just a misuse of the app, and not what it was intended to create. But I have to say that I see more of this than I do from people reviewing movies they watched honestly. Is this an app people enjoy, or just an image they want to create about themselves to be more interesting to other people? I don’t really know, but I do hope that if you are saying that 3-hour silent film is your favorite, that is true.
