Rising 6th graders express disappointment that they’ve had the same teacher for the past 4+ years: ‘I’ve been with the same class since 2nd grade.’

Would you enjoy having the same teacher for five years in elementary school?

There are many benefits to having a new homeroom teacher every year in elementary school. For starters, if you don’t like your teacher, or your teacher doesn’t like you, then you only have to deal with them for nine months before you never have to see them again! Not to mention, it’s helpful for kids’ brains to be exposed to different people, personalities, and teaching methods at a young age. When you’re an adult, your brain doesn’t need to be stimulated as much. You don’t need a new boss and a new job every single year. I’m not saying it’s wrong for a kid to have the same teacher every year, but the more change you can expose your kid to in a controlled environment, the better.

It’s common to have the same gym or music teacher for five years of elementary school, but it’s much stranger to have the same homeroom teacher follow you for more than a year. The teacher in this story has followed her 5th-grade class since they were in 2nd grade. After finding out that she would be following them to 6th grade as well, some of the kids have expressed disappointment.
