Have you noticed that games seem to go on and on and on forever? Like, literally forever. I remember back in the day when games used to end and stories had complete narrative arcs. Don’t get me wrong, I love an open world, but I’m starting to feel like all the biggest game publishers are fully embracing this new era of the endless game. «Why make a brand new game when gamers can just play Call of Duty until the end of time?» This seems to be the modus operandi of publishers like Activision. Are we witnessing the Marvelization of gaming? I certainly hope not. Personally, it makes me sad to think about developers like Valve, whose most successful games inevitably become a sort of curse that prevents less profitable masterpieces like Portal from getting made. Maybe if profit wasn’t the sole driving force of every industry in existence, we’d see some real innovation and creativity once in a while.
