There’s no such thing as too much Tolkien.
However, it may be the case that there are too many people trying to squeeze what they can out of his enviable legacy. For most of the 21st century, the entertainment industry has been trying to find new and interesting ways of retelling and embellishing the many stories of Middle-earth, to varying degrees of success.
There are many who would argue that just because something is going to garner an audience doesn’t mean that it needs to be made. This is what some have started to say about The Hunt for Gollum, arguing that a relative lack of source material from the man himself could make it a project that operates more as fan service than something worth numerous rewatches.
While new projects can come with a little controversy in this aspect, that should not take away from the glorious original texts and what they mean to so many around the world. The Lord of the Rings remains one of the most in-depth and influential fantasy series, and it is still gaining new fans after all this time. Between the books and the original movies, there is plenty to enjoy over and over.
That is before we even approach the matter of the memes. The humor is truly what keeps the fandom alive and allows it to continue touching the lives of so many of us. The fact that LOTR lovers know how to take a joke is one of the best things about them.
