This woman took the already harsh I need some space conversation and managed to turn it into one of the meanest, ugliest interactions I’ve heard of. And if I were her husband, she’d have all the me time she could dream of because she would be all alone.
She just took a conversation between partners and turned it into emotional warfare. It stops being about recharging and starts being about removal. The nice version is lighting a candle and taking a quiet bath. The ugly version is resenting your partner for breathing in your direction after work and calling it a boundary.
Every person needs alone time, but functional adults manage it without turning their partner into an intruder. Real couples have hobbies, corners, and quiet understanding. They make room for each other without needing one person to vanish. Dysfunctional couples act like coexistence is an imposition. They start scheduling resentment the same way other people schedule dishes. She, on the other hand, wants the benefits of companionship with none of the inconvenience of another heartbeat nearby. The saddest part is how normalized it’s become. Emotional minimalism gets praised like growth when it’s really just detachment with better lighting.
This reminded me of a lesson I learned real early. High on the long list of life lessons my mother taught me early in my career as a human being stands one I used a whole lot growing up. I whiningly walked up to her and said I was bored, and she immediately responded with: «Boredom is a state of mind. Develop ways to interest and entertain yourself, and you’ll never be bored again.»
Boom, mic dropped, mind blown, and although it took 5 or 6-year-old me to train that muscle, I pretty much never was bored since.
Similarly, this woman, at 39, mind you, should learn a similar lesson, that is, if she wants to be a sufferable human to be around, which she doesn’t seem to hold very high on her priority list. The lesson is, you can, and should, have a peaceful, quiet time WITH your significant other around. You can think, go on long walks in your mental palace, daydream, and do basically anything you please in the vicinity of the person YOU chose to spend the rest of your life with.
Boom, mic drop, mind blown. I know!
