The misogynistic gamer is a well-known trope, and while it’s not true for all gamers, it certainly applies to a large facet of the subculture. A good game is like a good pet. It’s there when you get home, excited to see you, ready to play. But unlike a pet, it doesn’t require any day-to-day maintenance. You don’t need to feed it, you don’t need to take it for walks, and it won’t wake you up in the middle of …

A game is a portal into another dimension where you can be the hero of your story. You can be a hero in your own life, too, but in video games, it’s more cut and dry. You get to do awesomely impossible tasks that save lives and fulfill your destiny. Sure, you kind of do …

Like tennis, gaming is a lifelong hobby. It can grow with you. But unlike sports, your body doesn’t really age out of gaming. As long as you have some …

Being immersed in a good game is like hiding yourself away in a good novel. The characters, the world, and the slowly unfolding plot wrap you up in a big hug and take you away from the real world for a while. You’re excited to come home to it after a long day. You think …

Friends who game together stay together. It’s a beautiful way to bond. Like many of the great bonding activities, it doesn’t require you to look at each other. You tend to speak more freely when you don’t have to look someone in the eye. It’s also a boon for friendship to have a common enemy. Usually, that’s a …

I recently heard an idea that confirmed my faith in gaming. Somebody I know was asked out on a first date for «DUI Mario Kart.» The idea for the date was simple, genius, and probably self-explanatory: get drunk and play Mario Kart. The simplest of things can become exciting when we give them a clever …

Every gamer needs their gamer fuel. For some, it’s the classic Doritos/ Mountain Dew combo. For others, it’s the more bourgeois combination of iced coffee and cubed cheese. And for a special few, it’s pure adrenaline that makes the time fly. A good game will invite you into a time loop and keep you there for a …

We all had the game that made us say gaming was for us. For many, that happens in childhood. It was usually some simplistic game with fun, colorful graphics that grabbed our attention as children and turned us into the gamers we are today. For me, and many, it was Mario Kart. Which still holds …

Life isn’t just fun and games… unless it is. We have fun, and we have games. Games are fun. Did whoever coined that phrase know that? Sure, you can’t have fun and play games all day. Someone has to work, pay the bills, and feed the dog. But the crazy thing about the 21st century is that …
